On July 1, 2026, Tonga's Type Approval regulatory authority was officially transferred from the MIC department under MEIDECC to the Communications Commission Tonga (CCT). Prior to 2014, Tonga's communications regulation was managed by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC). In 2014, MIC was merged into the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC); however, the communications regulatory branch continued to be commonly referred to as MIC.
