EU: The European Commission updates RED guidelines, including new content such as common chargers

On October 7, 2026, the European Commission released updated guidelines for the Radio Equipment Directive (RED, 2014/53/EU), aiming to provide manufacturers and other stakeholders with further guidance on the application of the directive.

The revised guidelines include guidance on RED common chargers and cybersecurity requirements, and address some recurring regulatory consultation questions. Key additions include: decision trees and case studies for determining whether radio equipment is "direct" or "indirect" networking; guidance on transitioning from RED cybersecurity requirements to the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA); clarifications regarding NFC (Near Field Communication) and terahertz devices; and further guidance on tolerance and measurement uncertainty in European Harmonized Standards.
