India: MeitY has incorporated standalone hard disk drives under BIS regulation
Officially published at:2026-05-05On May 5, 2026, India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued Announcement S.O. 2204(E) in the Government Gazette of India, amending the 2021 Electronic Information Technology Products (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order (CRO). This revision explicitly incorporates standalone hard disk drives (HDDs) into the mandatory registration framework managed by the Bureau of Standards of India (BIS). The external hard drive with the original USB interface remains within the current BIS regulatory framework. The revised regulatory requirements for standalone hard disk drives (HDDs) will take effect on November 5, 2026.

India: DOT revises telecommunications equipment standards
Officially published at:2026-04-16On April 16, 2026, India's Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a notice announcing the completion of the following revisions to telecommunications equipment standards:
- TEC 40162602 – Basic requirements for SIM cards;
- TEC 34732602 – Basic Requirements Standard for IP Security Devices.
The new standard will have a 90-day transition period, and starting July 15, 2026, only the revised standard will be available.

India: NCCS includes three types of IoT products as Group VI products in the scope of CSR testing
Officially published at:2026-03-27On March 27, 2026, India's National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS) issued a memorandum revising the scope of CSR testing to add Group VI devices, including vehicle trackers (ITSAR309072504), smart meters (ITSAR309052504), and feedback devices (ITSAR309042504). The previous five groups of products were:
- Group I: Core network equipment (e.g., mobile core network, switching system);
- Group II: Access network equipment (e.g., base stations, 4G/5G broadcasting equipment);
- Group III: Transmission network equipment (such as optical transmission equipment, microwave equipment);
- Group IV: IP network equipment (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls);
- Group V: Terminals and auxiliary equipment (such as VoIP terminals, dedicated communication terminals).

India: DoT postpones the deadline for requiring manufacturers to complete Wi-Fi 6 certificate updates.
Officially published at:2026-04-02The Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT) of India notified on March 6, 2026, requiring stakeholders to complete the certificate replacement of existing products that support 5925-6425MHz Wi-Fi by April 5, 2026, otherwise the band must not be enabled, activated, or used. The DoT issued another notice on April 2, 2026, extending the deadline by three months to July 6, 2026.

India: NCCS further extends the exemption period for security certification for IP routers and Wi-Fi CPE deployment in the cloud
Officially published at:2026-03-30Following the memorandum issued by India's National Communications Security Centre (NCCS) on July 7, 2025, exempting the certification of IP routers and Wi-Fi CPEs until March 31, 2026, the NCCS issued another notice on March 30, 2026, extending the security testing exemption period for related products to August 31, 2026.

India: NCCS issued two notices related to information security testing
Officially published at:2026-03-11India's National Centre for Communications Security (NCCS) recently issued two notices, the main contents of which are as follows:
- On March 11, 2026, NCCS published a notice on security test hardening。 The notice requires the applicant to provide reinforcement guidelines that meet the requirements of the annex to the notice, and requires that the reinforcement measures remain effective after the equipment is rebooted, and the telecommunications security testing laboratory (TSTL) should conduct tests on the reinforced samples, and the test results should indicate whether the technical requirements are met due to the use of reinforcement measures;
- On March 17, 2026, NCCS released another security test notice allowing applicants to apply modifications to their "device under test" at TSTL (DUT) provided that the relevant declaration is submitted as set forth in the Annex to the Notice.

India: BIS extends the validity of standard mark licenses to 5 years
Officially published at:2026-02-25On February 25, 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Amendment Regulations, 2026 (hereinafter referred to as the Regulations), which extends the validity of licenses to use its standard mark from 2 years to 5 years. Under the regulations, the first grant of a BIS Standard Mark Licence is valid for up to 5 years and can be renewed for 2 to 5 years with an annual prepayment of an annual fee. Previously, the issuance of BIS licenses was usually valid for up to 2 years and required frequent renewals.

India: BIS publishes IS/IEC 62368: Part 1: 2023 guidance for XR products
Officially published at:2026-03-09On March 9, 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) published the Implementation Guidelines for Extended Reality Products (Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality, etc.) (in accordance with IS/IEC 62368-1:2023) and the Implementation Guidelines for Migration to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023. Where:
- The product implementation guidelines state that from May 1, 2026, new certifications for XR products shall not use IS 13252 (Part1): 2010 or IS 616: 2017;
- The migration implementation guidance states that for all electronic and information technology products, the current transition period for IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 and IS 13252 (Part1):2010 or IS 616:2017 is until November 1, 2028. During the transition period, existing certificate holders should complete the standard replacement, and the certificate using the old standard will become invalid after the transition period.
