Chile: Issued a universal mobile phone charger Act


On October 10, 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism of Chile published Act No. 21695, which provides for universal chargers for all kinds of mobile phones and IT devices. Under this new law, mobile device sellers are required to provide consumers with chargers that can be purchased separately, rather than having to be purchased together. In addition, the seller must inform the consumer whether the mobile device is included with the charger when purchasing it. The act has a 2-year grace period for mobile phones and a 4-year grace period for other mobile devices.

Chile: SUBTEL publishes a public consultation on compliance requirements for short-range equipment


On June 13, 2024, the Chilean Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (SUBTEL) issued a public consultation to amend Waiver Resolution No. 1985 of 2017. The proposed changes will affect products that incorporate new technologies such as 5G and IoT. Key modifications include a self-assessment verification process and the requirement to have a QR code containing commercial and technical information printed on product packaging, as well as importers and manufacturers verifying compliance before selling. Products expected to be affected by the update include: telecommunications/terminal equipment, consumer electronics, data networking equipment, multimedia equipment, and broadcast equipment.

Importers and manufacturers are invited to actively participate in public consultations as industry members to ensure that their products meet the specified technical requirements and have test reports from accredited laboratories. These new requirements are mandatory for market access, and companies must update their certification procedures and product designs to comply with the new regulations, ensuring proper labeling and documentation to avoid customs and inspection delays.

Chile: SUBTEL amended Resolution No. 1985 of 2017 regarding exemption


On March 11, 2024, the Chilean Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (SUBTEL) published a resolution on the revision of the regulatory regulations for medical implantable communication systems (MICS), which will take effect from the date of publication. The main updates are as follows:

  • Operates in the frequency bands 401 - 406 MHz with a maximum radiated power of 25 μW and a maximum bandwidth of 300 kHz, using interference mitigation techniques as outlined in Annex 1 of the International Telecommunication Union Recommendation ITU-R RS.1346 to protect its operation from major spectrum users operating in the said frequency bands;
  • Operates in the frequency band of 2400 - 2483.5 MHz with a maximum radiated power of 2.5 mW and frequency hopping technology.
